What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is an artificial tooth cover, sometimes called a cap, that fits over an existing tooth. The purpose of a dental crown is to restore a severely damaged tooth while keeping the root of the tooth intact. A crown may be placed over a cracked tooth or a tooth that is severely decayed and doesn’t have enough natural enamel left for a composite filling.
We only use porcelain for crowns in our office. Porcelain most closely resembles natural tooth enamel, making it ideal for teeth that are highly visible.
Benefits of dental crowns
The natural root remains
Your existing tooth root remains in place when you get a crown. This maintains the natural bite strength of your tooth and preserves the jawbone and support structure for that tooth.
Crowns look natural
Porcelain crowns resemble natural tooth enamel and with the natural root in place, a dental crown looks very realistic. Your crown can be customized to match the color and shape of your existing teeth as well.
A crown is more affordable than a complete replacement.
If it is possible to restore your tooth with a crown, you will save money by avoiding replacement, such as a bridge or dental implant.
Why Choose Maine Dentistry?
At Maine Dentistry we understand that your time is valuable so we provide same day permanent crowns. Unlike the traditional process which requires you to return for multiple appointments or wear an uncomfortable temporary crown, we utilize digital technology in conjunction with our on-site milling unit, to deliver your crown within an hour.
Are you a good candidate for crowns?
An ideal candidate for a dental crown is someone with one or more teeth that have enamel damage, but the root portion is still intact. If a tooth is infected, meaning the soft pulp inside has been exposed to bacteria, a root canal may need to be done first to remove the infected tissue and fill the inside of the tooth root with composite material. If the natural crown of your tooth is decayed, chipped, or cracked, an artificial crown can be placed over it to protect what is left of the tooth.
