Cosmetic Veneers

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, shell-like covers for your teeth. Veneers attach to the front side of your existing teeth and slightly wrap around the sides. The purpose of veneers is cosmetic, meaning they improve the appearance of your teeth. Veneers can hide stains, gaps, chips, and disproportionate lengths. Porcelain is the best material for veneers because it most closely resembles natural tooth enamel and is strong enough to withstand bite force.

To be fitted with veneers, a thin layer of tooth enamel must be removed first. Then impressions are made of the teeth to create your veneers. When you are satisfied with your veneers they will be permanently attached to your existing teeth.

Are you a good candidate for veneers?

A good candidate for veneers is someone with healthy teeth that only have cosmetic defects. If your teeth have cavities, cracks, or severe damage of any kind, it doesn’t mean you can’t get veneers. It simply means you will need restorative procedures first. Once your teeth are healthy, they can be fitted with veneers.

Benefits of porcelain veneers

Natural Look

Porcelain veneers look very natural because porcelain resembles tooth enamel. Your veneers will be customized to be the color and shape of your teeth.

Cover stains that bleaching can’t remove

Some stains can’t be removed with teeth whitening treatments like bleaching gels. Veneers cover stains more effectively.

Make teeth look uniform

If your teeth are not the same size, shape, or length veneers can make them all look the same for a uniform appearance.

Only a thin layer of enamel is removed

You only lose a thin layer of enamel when having veneers placed. Crowns require a more significant tooth reduction.

Learn more about cosmetic veneers.

Veneers are considered to be a permanent enhancement to your teeth. Your dentist can remove them for you, but once your teeth have been prepped and fitted with veneers, you will need to replace them with new veneers or another restorative option.
Good quality porcelain veneers last an average of 10 years, but with good care and maintenance they can last for 20 or more. Porcelain veneers last longer than composite veneers, which may only last about 3 years.
Veneers are a cosmetic procedure, which means dental insurance typically won’t cover them. But financing is available to make the cost more affordable, allowing you to pay gradually for your veneers.
You should care for your porcelain veneers the same way you do your natural teeth. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to remove plaque and keep your veneers looking clean. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to keep from scratching your veneers. Especially avoid any toothpaste that contains baking soda.
