What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small metal post that fits precisely into the socket left by a missing tooth. Bone tissue naturally fuses with the biocompatible titanium to create a solid foundation – a replacement tooth root. Implants can support a single tooth, act as the foundation for bridgework, or support dentures. There are typically 3 structural components to a complete dental implant fixture:
1. The Implant – The post that is surgically implanted in either your upper or lower jaw. This serves as the replacement tooth root.
2. The Abutment – A small connector that can be cemented or screwed into the implant. This is what connects the final restoration to the implant.
3. The Restoration – This is what is visible in your mouth. The restoration is the crown, bridge or dentures that are custom made to match your existing teeth.
Are you a good candidate for implants?
To be an ideal candidate for dental implants, you must have one or more teeth that are too decayed or damaged to be saved. You also need to have sufficient bone structure in your jaw to support an implant. It is best if the teeth being replaced have not been missing for long. However, even if your jawbone has weakened and deteriorated some, you can still be eligible for implants after a bone graft procedure.
Benefits of dental implants
Lasting a lifetime
Once a dental implant integrates with the bone, it can stay solidly in place for the rest of your life.
Natural appearance
Because we pay close attention to detail when designing the implant crown, a dental implant looks very realistic and mimics your natural teeth.
Natural function
A dental implant functions like a natural healthy tooth would by providing equal bite and strength.
Preserve Jawbone and Strength
Dental implants help in preserving the surrounding bone and other supporting structures for you teeth that would otherwise deteriorate over time in the absence of a tooth.
