What Are Dentures?

Dentures are false teeth meant to replace your natural teeth in the event of their loss. There are two different types to choose from, so we can ultimately decide what’s best for every patient’s unique situation. These two types are referred to as full and partial dentures.

A full denture will replace an entire arch of teeth in either the upper or lower jaw. and is held in place via suction, adhesives, or dental implants. A partial denture can replace multiple teeth when there are still some healthy teeth left and can attach to your existing teeth with metal clasps. Some dentures are removable and others stay in place all day and night.

Dentures are not the only option for missing teeth, just one of the many that our staff may discuss with you.

Benefits of Dentures

There are many benefits to replacing your missing teeth with dentures.

  • Restore your smile. Dentures can give you back your smile. Good quality dentures look very natural.
  • Eat your favorite foods. With dentures, you can eat foods you couldn’t before with missing or damaged teeth.
  • Keep your facial shape. Wearing dentures will help preserve the bone structure in your jaw and the shape of your face.
  • Improve your speech. Dentures allow you to speak more clearly.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dentures?

If the majority of your teeth are missing or in need of extraction, you are probably a good candidate for dentures. You may need dentures on either the upper or lower jaw or both. Traditional dentures can work regardless of the bone structure of your jaw. Implant-supported dentures need a certain amount of bone structure for the implants to be placed, but a bone graft procedure can help prepare the jaw, if necessary.
