What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a treatment option for patients who have an abnormal tongue position that affects their breathing. The goal of myofunctional therapy is to help patients learn how to reposition their tongue and jaw during times of rest (not eating or talking). Myofunctional therapy involves physical exercises of the face, neck, and soft tissues of the mouth that train the tongue and jaw to sit differently. It helps encourage proper breathing and speaking.

Myofunctional therapy is sometimes combined with an oral appliance that helps position your jaw and tongue correctly. Maine dentistry provides Myobrace appliances for patients to help accelerate your myofunctional therapy results.

Benefits of Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy is beneficial in a variety of ways:

  • Non-invasive. Myofunctional therapy does not involve surgery or any invasive procedures. It is simply a series of exercises you can do daily to change the way your tongue and mouth rests when not in use. A removable appliance may be used in combination with myofunctional therapy that will only need to be worn at night and for a few hours during the day.
  • Can treat sleep apnea. One potential benefit of myofunctional therapy is that it may stop snoring and cure sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by breathing problems.
  • May improve facial appearance. The shape of your face may change some with myofunctional therapy, and the results are a physical improvement in your appearance.
  • Effective at any age. Myofunctional therapy can work for many patients from young children to older adults. When applied in early childhood, it can correct existing issues and prevent the need for further treatment as an adult.

Procedures Offered

Maine dentistry provides both myofunctional therapy and an oral appliance called Myobrace. When combined, these treatments can retrain your tongue and jaw to rest properly and promote better breathing during the day and night.
