What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a replacement option for one or more missing or damaged teeth. A traditional bridge is a row of artificial teeth, each end consisting of a crown that fits over the healthy tooth on either side of the gap. The crowns anchor the bridge in place, suspending one or a few artificial teeth in between.

In cases where multiple teeth need to be replaced in a row, a dental implant supported bridge may be used. Dental implants are placed on either side of the gap that the bridge can attach to. One benefit of an implant supported bridge is that it won’t affect your healthy teeth in any way.

Are you a good candidate for bridges?

To be a good candidate for a dental bridge, you may have one or more teeth in a row that need to be replaced. If the teeth are not in a row, you may require more than one bridge to replace your missing or damaged teeth. It helps to have a few healthy teeth to act as anchors for the bridge, but in case you don’t, dental implants can be placed to support your bridge instead. If you are missing the majority or all of your teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, you may be a better candidate for dentures.

Our Patients Say it Best

  • "Dr. Ben Lawlor took the time to listen to my concerns, my past dental experiences, elsewhere, and to make me feel 100% comfortable before he even touched my mouth. Learn more about dental bridges.

On average, a traditional dental bridge will last between 5 and 15 years. It may last even longer with good care and maintenance. An implant supported bridge may last longer than a traditional bridge because it won’t affect your healthy teeth.
Dental bridges are typically made of porcelain. Porcelain closely resembles tooth enamel for a natural look. The color and shape can be customized to blend in with your existing teeth.
The process for getting a bridge involves reshaping the existing teeth to make room for the crowns to attach. During this process the area will be numbed with a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain. Any discomfort you experience following your procedure can be managed with over the counter pain medication.
Partial dentures typically consist of an artificial material that looks like gum tissue that is formed around the artificial teeth. A bridge only consists of artificial teeth that sit against your natural gums. Partial dentures attach to the existing teeth with metal clasps and are removable. A dental bridge is permanent, only removable by your dentist.
